Cyber Liability Insurance

Business Insurance

Small businesses are targeted precisely because they are small.

Attackers go where defenses are thin. Cyber coverage pays for breach response, ransomware, notification costs and the business income you lose while your systems are down.

The Basics

The response costs more than most owners expect.

People picture a ransom payment. The larger expense is usually everything around it: forensic investigators determining what was accessed, legal counsel on notification obligations, notifying affected customers, credit monitoring, and the days or weeks you cannot operate normally.

Your general liability policy does not cover any of this, and standard property policies exclude electronic data. Cyber is a separate line for a reason.

  • Breach response team available immediately
  • Ransomware and extortion coverage
  • Notification costs and credit monitoring
  • Business interruption while systems are unavailable

Higher Exposure If You

  • • Store customer payment information
  • • Hold health or employment records
  • • Move money by wire or ACH
  • • Depend on software to operate daily

Common Questions

Cyber Liability FAQs

We’re small. Are we really a target?
Attacks are largely automated and indiscriminate. Smaller businesses are often easier to compromise and less likely to have response resources, which is exactly why they get hit.
Doesn’t my general liability cover this?
No. General liability covers bodily injury and physical property damage. Data breaches and electronic losses are excluded, and property policies exclude electronic data as well.
What if an employee is tricked into wiring money?
That is funds transfer fraud, and it is one of the most common losses we see. Coverage varies by policy, so it is worth confirming the limit rather than assuming it is included.
Will underwriters ask about our security?
Yes. Most now require multi-factor authentication, backups and basic controls before they will quote. Having those in place improves both your pricing and your odds of never filing a claim.
