Medicare Part D

Medicare

The right drug plan depends on your prescriptions, not the premium.

The cheapest Part D plan is frequently the most expensive one once your actual medications are priced through it. We compare against your real list, not a generic average.

The Basics

Every plan has a different formulary.

Part D plans each publish a formulary, the list of drugs they cover and the tier each one sits in. Two plans with similar premiums can differ by thousands of dollars a year depending on whether your specific medications are on formulary and where.

Formularies change annually. So does your prescription list. That is why a Part D plan worth keeping this year may be the wrong plan next year, and why the annual review is not busywork.

The Late Penalty

If you go without creditable drug coverage after becoming eligible, Medicare can add a permanent penalty to your Part D premium for as long as you have coverage. It is worth enrolling in an inexpensive plan even if you take no medications today.

Common Questions

Part D FAQs

I don’t take any medications. Do I still need Part D?
Generally yes, unless you have other creditable drug coverage. Skipping it can create a permanent premium penalty later, and inexpensive plans exist precisely for this situation.
Should I review my plan every year?
Yes. Formularies, tiers and premiums all change annually, and so does your prescription list. A plan that was right last year may not be this year.
What if my drug isn’t covered?
You can request an exception, ask your prescriber about a covered alternative, or choose a different plan at Annual Enrollment. We can look at all three.
Is Part D included in Medicare Advantage?
Usually. Most Advantage plans include drug coverage, so you would not buy a separate Part D plan. With Original Medicare and a Medigap policy, you do.
